In memoriam Luis Díez Merino (1939-2026)

On Thursday, January 8, 2026, Professor Luis Díez Merino, passed away in Zaragoza, Spain. Díez Merino, nephew of Alejandro Díez Macho (discoverer of the Targum Neofiti), was born in Palencia (Spain) in 1939. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1963, within the religious congregation of the Passionists and obtained his doctorate from the Pontifical Biblical Institute (Rome) in 1970. He was Professor of Hebrew and Aramaic at the University of Barcelona (1979-2009), although he also taught at the Hebrew University and the Complutense University. He devoted his research to Targumic studies, excelling in his editions of the Targums of Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job based on manuscripts preserved in the ancient library of the Complutense University.
