International Targum Text Edition Project

Motion to form an Exploratory Committee, presented to and approved by the International Organization for Targumic Studies. 2 August 2001

The Motion:

The International Organization for Targum Study has decided to investigate the feasibility of establishing an international project for the purpose of creating editions of all rabbinic period targums on the basis of all known manuscripts. This feasibility study will be carried out by a committee of nine? members, to be known as the Targum Edition Exploratory Committee (TEEC). It will report back to the IOTS at its next triennial meeting, in 2004, with a recommendation to establish such a project (accompanied by a concrete and detailed plan for doing so) or a recommendation to not carry out such a project.

The Charge:

The TEEC is charged to explore the following aspects and any other relevant issues:

1) A more detailed specification of the goal(s) of the project.
2) Delineation of the process for achieving those goals.
3) The laying out of an organizational structure for governing and carrying out that process.
4) Identification of personnel who could and would take part in the project.
5) Funding.

The Timetable:

September, 2002: Complete together a penultimate draft for the project, including as much detail as possible. Send out for discussion.

January 2003: Deadline for receiving all feedback. Revise project proposal.

Sept. 2003: Complete final version of proposal. Send out for discussion. Begin lining up personnel for specific positions.
